Google’s Latest Gmail Update Solves a Problem Many Users Had
Finally Gmail allows users to update their email without any hassle.
I didn’t notice right away. I thought my Wi-Fi was acting up. Chrome felt a little slow. Then I tried to update it—nothing. No update prompt, no error. Just… nothing. I restarted the Mac. Still nothing. Checked again a few days later. Same.
So I googled it. Turns out it’s not a glitch. Google’s just… done with macOS Big Sur. Chrome’s pulling support. Not in some future version—this is happening in August 2025. Version 127 is the last one that’ll run on Big Sur. After that, Chrome 128 and anything beyond won’t even install.
They changed the Chrome system requirements, quietly. Big Sur’s version 11. Now it takes macOS Monterey (version 12) or higher if you want to keep getting updates. If you’re on 11, that’s it. No more updates. No security patches either.

You can still use it. Chrome will open, it’ll browse. But it won’t be maintained. And that’s the part that makes me hesitate.
It’s kind of like using an old phone. Still turns on. Still gets you through the day. But one by one, your apps stop updating. The battery gets worse. Stuff gets slow. It still works, but not really.
So yeah, if you’re still using Google Chrome on Mac, and that Mac’s on Big Sur, this is your warning about the macOS Big Sur Chrome issue!
I mean, you’ve got a couple of ways you could handle it. Kind of depends if your Mac’s able to run a newer OS. Some are fine, some aren’t. Mine’s right on the edge.
If you can, try moving up to macOS Monterey or Ventura. I know Sonoma is out, and Sequoia is coming, but Monterey is a safer middle ground if you’re upgrading an older Mac.
Just check System Settings > Software Update and see what pops up. If nothing does, your Mac probably doesn’t support anything beyond Big Sur.
If you're stuck on Big Sur, you’ve still got choices. I tried Firefox and it worked fine. Microsoft Edge too, if that doesn’t weird you out on a Mac. Safari is always there. They’re all still being updated for macOS 11, at least for now.
Yeah, you can keep using Chrome version 127. It won’t vanish. But without Chrome update support, you’ll want to be careful. I wouldn’t log into bank accounts or shop online with it. Don’t install new extensions. Probably a good idea to run antivirus, just in case.
I’ve been doing that for a week now—using Chrome only for random searches. Switched over to Firefox for anything sensitive. It’s not perfect, but it’s something.
Not totally sure which macOS version you're even on? Yeah, I wasn’t either. Just click the Apple logo in the top left > About This Mac. It’ll show something like macOS Big Sur 11.7.10 up at the top.
If it says Big Sur, that’s version 11—the one Chrome’s dropping. Anything 12 or above (Monterey, Ventura, etc.) is still safe for now.
This isn’t just about Big Sur. Sooner or later, Chrome will drop support for Ventura too. That’s just how it works now. Fast updates, short support windows. If you want Chrome to stay current, your system has to as well.

Roughly every month.
Google has a list by model.
If you’re still running Big Sur, consider this your heads-up. Might be time to move on—or at least switch browsers until you can.
